- Impaction: They may not erupt fully, becoming stuck against other teeth or inside the gum.
- Pain and Infection: Improper eruption can lead to pain, swelling, and infections.
- Damage to Other Teeth: An impacted wisdom tooth can damage adjacent teeth or affect alignment.
How are wisdom teeth extracted?
Your dentist or oral surgeon will make an incision in the gumline, creating flaps to expose both the tooth and the underlying bone area. Any bone that blocks access to the tooth will be removed before the dentist or oral surgeon divides the tooth into sections, making it easier to remove.
The dentist removes the tooth and clears away any remaining debris from around the gumline or the bone. Then, the wound is stitched up. The dentist puts gauze over the extraction site to control any extra bleeding and help with clotting.
Post-Tooth Removal Care Instructions
✅ Bite on the gauze placed over the extraction site for 30–45 minutes to help stop bleeding.
✅ If bleeding continues, replace with a fresh gauze or a damp tea bag (tannic acid helps clotting).
✅ A little oozing of blood mixed with saliva is normal for 24 hours.
Avoid for the First 24 Hours:
❌ Do not rinse, spit, or use a straw (this may dislodge the clot).
❌ No smoking or alcohol (slows healing).
❌ Avoid touching the area with your tongue or fingers.
